13–14 June 2020: coronavirus situation tracker for Kenyan informal settlementsx
Topline summary:
Over 13–14 June, cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in 4 settlements, 3 in Nairobi — Kibera, Korogocho and Mathare — and also Naivasha.
These 4 settlements are also 4 of only 5 settlements that have reported any testing — and the levels of testing reported are still very low. The 5th, Viwandani, has also reported testing but no cases.
Kibera is the only settlement reporting deaths.
Prevention and response activities: ‘What is being done’ simple index hovering around similar still quite low level for most settlements. Regarding settlements that are reporting active cases: Kibera and Korogocho have both improved the levels of what is being done in terms of prevention and response activities over time; while Mathare and Naivasha have reported some decrease in what is being done.
Kibera, Korogocho and Naivasha are all reporting isolation centres and have cases of infection, while Mathare reports cases but no isolation centres. Viwandani reports isolation centres, but no cases.
Naivasha is reporting cases but reports inadequate information on covid-19, awareness-raising and information on government directives. Provision of information on covid-19 has improved slightly in Kibera and Korogocho since the last report.
Mathare’s levels of social distancing remain comparatively very low, when compared to other settlements with cases.

The information in this report was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji from residents of informal settlements in the Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Nakuru. We are aiming to collect information and report on it every 2-3 days throughout the crisis.
The data presented in this report captures the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in urban Kenya. It presents the picture on the 2-3 days before the report’s date. Information was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji and SDI Kenya from community mobilizers living in informal settlements in the counties listed. Mobilizers were asked to interview 5 people in their village and provide their responses using an online survey. Mobilizers were compensated for the cost of their phone data used.
