10–11 June 2020: coronavirus situation tracker for Kenyan informal settlements

Topline summary:

  • In the past 2 days, cases of infection are still being reported in 3 Nairobi settlements that reported cases in the last reprt —Korogocho (13% of reporters from this settlement), Kwa Njenga (7%) and Mathare (10%)

  • In the past 2 days, cases of infection are also now being reported in Kibera (Nairobi) and Obunga (Kisumu) — both reporting 3%, up from 0 in last report.

  • Testing: All settlements reporting cases are also reporting that testing is taking place, apart from Obunga (Kisumu), which has not reported testing. Viwandani is also reporting some testing (4% of respondents from this settlement said there had been testing in their village), but no reported cases.

  • Deaths: in the past 2 days there have been deaths related to Covid-19 in 1 Nairobi settlement, Kwa Reuben, where 5% of reporters from this settlement said there had been deaths in their village. Kwa Reuben last reported cases of infection on 23 May (3% of reporters).

  • Prevention and response activities: the 'what is being done' simple index remains similar from the last report with percentages across 20–38% for all settlements except Obunga (44%) and Naivasha (12%) — a 100% score would mean all reporters agree all areas of activity are taking place in their village.

  • Still very small percentages of reporters are saying that isolation centres are present in their areas — In Nairobi these are only in Kibera (3%), Korogocho (3%), Kwa Njenga (7%) and Viwandani (9%); with highest reported in Nakuru in Naivasha (23%). All other settlements are at 0.

  • Information (on coronavirus and government directives) and awareness-raising rates are particularly low for 3 settlements — Kwa Njenga and Kwa Reuben (Nairobi) and Naivasha (Nakuru) — when compared to percentages of reporters reporting these activities in other settlements; many reach into the 50-60%s and higher.

  • All settlements report social distancing, at between 25% and 81% of reporters in each settlement, except Mathare (10%).

We welcome use of the data we publish, but please acknowledge that it has been collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji/SDI Kenya and include a link to muungano.net.

The information in this report was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji from residents of informal settlements in the Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Nakuru. We are aiming to collect information and report on it every 2-3 days throughout the crisis.

The data presented in this report captures the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in urban Kenya. It presents the picture on the 2-3 days before the report’s date. Information was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji and SDI Kenya from community mobilizers living in informal settlements in the counties listed. Mobilizers were asked to interview 5 people in their village and provide their responses using an online survey. Mobilizers were compensated for the cost of their phone data used.
