17–18 June 2020: coronavirus situation tracker for Kenyan informal settlements
Topline summary for 17-18 June:
Reports of cases have been isolated to only two Nairobi settlements - Korogocho and Mathare.
Testing remains prevalent in Korogocho, Kwa Njenga, Mathare (Nairobi) and Naivasha (Nakuru).
Thankfully, no reports of deaths across all counties.
‘What is being done’ simple index remains consistent across Kisumu and Nairobi, with a significant positive increase in Naivasha (Nakuru).
Relatively low prevalence rates across all settlements for isolation centres, with very low numbers reported in Korogocho and none reported in Mathare (two settlements reporting cases).
Adequate information about coronavirus, awareness-raising activities and information on government directives is remaining strong in Kisumu and Nairobi, with significant improvement across all three ‘information channels’ reported in Naivasha (Nakuru).
Social distancing remains prevalent and widespread across all three settlements, and much more widespread than the restriction of particular people’s movements.
Basic needs support for vulnerable people is more widespread than for non-vulnerable people and is maintaining similar low levels in Kisumu and Nairobi counties, with Nakuru improving in both.
PPE & hygiene numbers remain strongest in all settlements related to water supply, public handwashing facilities, and provision of soap and hand sanitizer.

The information in this report was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji from residents of informal settlements in the Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Nakuru. We are aiming to collect information and report on it every 2-3 days throughout the crisis.
The data presented in this report captures the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in urban Kenya. It presents the picture on the 2-3 days before the report’s date. Information was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji and SDI Kenya from community mobilizers living in informal settlements in the counties listed. Mobilizers were asked to interview 5 people in their village and provide their responses using an online survey. Mobilizers were compensated for the cost of their phone data used.
